To the surprise of no one, Wicked has defied gravity and flown to the top of the box office in its opening weekend. The film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical raked in $114 million to grab the #1 spot.

Universal’s adaptation of Act One of the popular Broadway musical Wicked dominated the box office in North America and earned another $50.2 million internationally. The film’s success marks the third biggest domestic debut of the year and the fourth biggest start in history for a musical.

Despite a decade-long development process and a hefty production budget, Wicked received critical acclaim and an “A” grade on CinemaScore.

The weekend also saw the release of Paramount’s Gladiator II, which opened solidly in second place with $55.5 million. Overall, the weekend box office revenues reached approximately $210 million, setting the stage for a strong finish to the year.

Red One ($13.3 million), Bonhoeffer. Pastor. Spy. Assassin ($5.1 million), and Venom: The Last Dance ($4 million) rounded out the top five.
